FyzioTrails

FyzioTrails – An Innovative Balance and Adaptability Training Program for Older Adults

FyzioTrails is a modern rehabilitation and training concept focused on improving balance, stability, and the ability to adapt to environmental changes in older adults. The project addresses one of the most serious challenges of aging—falls—which significantly affect independence, health, and overall quality of life.

Why FyzioTrails Was Created

As people age, a range of physical and functional changes increase the risk of falls. A key factor is a reduced ability to respond quickly to changes in the environment, such as during walking or when transitioning between different surfaces. FyzioTrails therefore focuses on developing movement adaptability—the body’s ability to respond automatically and effectively to unexpected stimuli.

Core Principles of the Program

At the heart of the project is sensorimotor training, which supports subconscious activation of the correct muscle groups at the right time. The goal is to improve posture, stability, and gait quality so that movement becomes more natural, confident, and less dependent on conscious control.

An integral part of the training is exercise on the Posturomed balance platform, which enables safe balance training in an upright position. The unstable surface continuously challenges the body to respond to small changes in position, thereby strengthening muscle coordination and postural control.

Virtual Reality as a Motivational Tool

What makes FyzioTrails unique is the integration of sensorimotor training with immersive virtual reality. Using VR headsets, participants enter a realistic virtual environment that naturally elicits movement responses—head rotation, weight shifting, obstacle avoidance, and upper-limb activity.

The virtual environment transforms conventional rehabilitation exercises into an engaging experience. Participants are more motivated, exercise longer and more intensively, often without consciously realizing that they are training. The newly acquired movement skills are then naturally transferred to everyday situations.

Safety and the Role of the Therapist

Training always takes place in a safe environment under the supervision of a physiotherapist. The virtual handrails are precisely aligned with the physical supports of the balance platform, and the entire system is individually calibrated for each user. Movement within the virtual environment is carefully controlled to ensure comfort and to minimize the risk of discomfort or motion sickness.

Practical Experience

Early experience indicates that participants perceive improved stability, greater confidence while walking, and an increased sense of safety during everyday activities. The virtual environment is very well received and often evokes positive emotions and memories, further enhancing engagement in the training.

The Future of the Project

FyzioTrails is an open and evolving concept. Future development includes expanding interactive tasks within the virtual environment, systematic data collection, and evaluation of training effectiveness, as well as broader application in rehabilitation and preventive care.
